This is the first peal in the tower, and fourth known peal outside Norwich and London, the two centres of ringing at the time. It is the first recorded peal by the Society of Cambridge Youths, and a memorandum recording the peal can be found in the Society’s earliest surviving accounts book. It was rung on the back eight of the new ring of ten bells cast by Richard Phelps of Whitechapel in 1722–23. This ring replaced an earlier eight, but there is no evidence that the old bells had ever been pealed.
