St Peter Monday, 12 February 1883 in 2h 56 (20–2–04 in E) 5040 Grandsire Triples Composed by Holt's Ten-Part 1 George Winn (C) 2 William Wearing 3 William Crook 4 James Hartley 5 R Johnson 6 John Lennon 7 Patrick Mulligan 8 David Magown Possibly the first peal on the bells, according to the tower's ringing record book. There is, however, a note that: In 1879 Mr Gardner of Greaves Park having given £1000 to purchace and install a set of eight bells, they were consecrated by Dr Alexander Goss, Bishop of Liverpool, in which See the parish they lay on 23rd December 1879. Gardner died in early December 1879 and so never heard the bells he provided. That ceremony involves a ritual exorcism and annointing of the bells as well as naming them after a saint under whose protection they are placed, and the bells would be hung after that. The bells were first rung on 21st January 1880 by a band from the Parish Church, and it is suggested that "a peal" may have been rung. The above ringers are from this parish, and so this many be the first peal ring by a native band, but not on the bells. | |
