" We left walden Four of us at 8 in the morning and drove to Braughing, it rained all the way. we started the peal about 11:30 and rang a good peal we afterwards adjourned to the Old Bell Inn and refreshed the Inner man before we started our homeward journey, as there had been so much rain the water had overflown the bank of a large water course by the side of the road in Furneux Pelham. as the water was about 24 metres deep we had to drive through it being a very unpleasant ride!, the same evening in the Parish of Clavering we had to get on the seats of a cart to clean the water this was also a very unpleasant Journey but we got through all but (sic) stood the chance of being drowned.we arrived at saffron Walden about 8pm and spent a very pleasant evening at the Eight bells and was (Sic) thankful that we got home alright!" from Samuel slater's peal book
