Special 90th Birthday Compliment to Derek C Jackson, who has been a member of the Eling band since 1963, and was Tower Captain from 2005 – 2017, when he reluctantly had to give up ringing due to ill health.
Among Derek’s many achievements over the years, he founded the Southampton University Guild of Change Ringers in 1954. He is particularly proud of this as the Guild is still thriving after 70 years and counting.
Derek was the Winchester & Portsmouth Diocesan Guild Secretary in the early 1970’s, where he was instrumental in setting up the Guild Bell Restoration Fund, he was again Guild Secretary in the 1980’s & 90’s.
Derek was a W&P Central Council Representative in the 1980’s & 90’s. He was also Christchurch & Southampton District Ringing Master for several years, and has conducted many peals, including peals of multiple Doubles methods some consisting of over 100 methods. Derek has been an inspiration to generations of ringers, including myself!
The ringing included an unsuccessful Quarter Peal of Grandsire Triples. We intend to have another attempt to mark the occasion within the next few weeks.
