St Andrew's Saturday, 13 July 2024 in 48m (9–1–17) 1440 Plain Bob Minor (being two 720's) 1 Christopher C P Woodcock (C) 2 Robert H Harvey 3 David W Bee 4 Revd Geoffrey Spencer 5 Michael Christie 6 Paul Sharp Rung in memory of Captain Matthew Flinders RN, native of neighbouring Donington - being born there on 16th March 1774, who is returning home today and is being reburied inside St Mary and the Holy Rood Church Donington - the Church where he was baptised. He is being given full Naval honours including an 18 gun salute and pallbearers from the Royal Navy's state ceremonial team. The young Matthew Flinders was educated here at Horbling at the Reverend John Shinglar's Grammar School, which is thought to have been held in this Church - Rev Shinglar being the curate here and is named on the fourth bell. Captain Flinders led the first circumnavigation of Australia, and is credited with naming the continent. He died in London on 19th July 1814 aged 40 and was buried in St James's burial ground Camden, until his lost grave was rediscovered in 2019. First Quarter Peal on the bells for four and half years - since ringing was allowed to recommence, after a period of silence as no ringing was allowed on the bells.
