Ringing Out for Peace in commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings and to celebrate the contribution of Major CB (Bernard) Stone, DSO, RE, Great Uncle of 5.
Major Stone landed early at Bernieres-sur-Mer on Juno Beach with the Royal Engineers in support of the Canadians. He was a Major in command of four Platoons, over 200 men across about a 3 mile front. Their initial task was to clear obstacles to create gaps for the landing craft. The water was much deeper than predicted. He jumped into the water to clear mines and was awarded a Distinguished Service Order (just one of 8 earned by an RE on the day). They then went on to clear mines and obstacles, and demolish and build bridges.
