The ‘Major’ (bourdon bell) was chimed 213 times before and after the service for the installation of the Right Reverend Dr. Helen-Ann Hartley as the 13th Bishop of Newcastle. Currently Newcastle Cathedral bells may not be rung as there is a dangerously loose weather vane - hence the “Major” as a counterbalanced swing chiming bell was rung.
