Especially arranged and rung to commemorate the 50th anniversary this day of the first Sunday service of the choir of Hythe Parish Church, Kent, under the current Organist & Choirmaster Dr (now Professor) Berkeley Hill. He grew up in Swindon where his father founded the Swindon Orpheus Choir, and his appointment prior to Hythe was Immanuel Church, Swindon, hence the choice of method. Choice of venue for attempt was predicated thus: St Barnabas was the first church built as a visible embodiment of Tractarianism; the surpliced choir of boys & men in stalls being but one aspect of this; Sir F.A. Gore-Ouseley gave the brass screen-gates here when he was Serving his Title, and the ashes of Sir Basil Harwood (former Organist & Choirmaster here) are interred under the Chancel between the stalls.
To commemorate the recent successful peal here for nearly 120 years, and the above 50th anniversary, the ringer of the 6th presented a clock for the ringing room and set it going, prior to this performance; originally retailed from nearby 235 Brompton Road c1897, to go with the gas-mantle and glass, also restored a few years since (non-working!)
