St John the Evangelist Friday, 3 August 2001 (14–0–18 in F) 1260 Grandsire Triples 1 Ian A Renyard 2 John E Hearn 3 Phillip A Renyard 4 Ian C Moore 5 Mark Chittenden-Pile (C) 6 Damien S Smith 7–8 Christopher J Cooper 7-8 - first double-handled QP on more than 6 bell method-stage. First QP on the bells since re-leathering of baldricks on two of the clappers by ringer of 7-8, which were so bad they were hitting the wheels! Especially arranged and rung to honour HM Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother's 101st birthday. Following this attempt the band went over to St Michael, Cornhill, London EC, for a London County Association practice night. ![]() The band in the ringing room, following the QP, minus ringer of 7-8 who took the photo. L to R: I.C. Moore (4), J.E. Hearn (2), M. Chittenden-Pile (5 - C), I.A. Renyard (Treble), P.A. Renyard (3), D.S. Smith (6). (Image: Christopher J Cooper) ![]() The two clappers (mentioned in footnote) just prior to refitting before attempting this quarter peal. As can be seen in the lower picture, the paint has worn right away on the side of the clapper which was scraping round the edge of the bell; the other side was hitting the wheel. Probably the baldricks were worn away through intense peal ringing here in the 1970s. New leather for one of clappers is shewn in the upper picture. The cost of the work was borne by the ringer of 7-8. (Image: Christopher J Cooper) | |
