Specially arranged and rung on the Civic Bells in honour of Squadron Leader George Leonard “JOHNNY” JOHNSON, MBE, DFM, upon his 100th birthday today!
Johnny is the last surviving original member of 617 Squadron, which undertook the famous Dambusters Raid in May 1943, flying out of RAF Scampton. RAF Scampton has close connections to the City, being located just to the North of the City and has the honour of the Freedom of the City.
Johnny was born here in Lincolnshire and was posted to various RAF Stations in Lincolnshire during his RAF Career.
Johnny has also been a key fundraiser for the International Bomber Command Centre & Memorial which has recently been built on Canwick Hill overlooking the City of Lincoln, something which has been very close to his heart - remembering all his friends and colleagues of Bomber Command.
Many Happy Returns!
