This Quarter was rung in memory of Revd John Manley Hawker, the great great grandfather of ringers Anne (3) and Alistair Donaldson (6).
John Hawker was born and brought up in Plymouth, the eldest son of W H Hawker who ran the vintners on the quay and the family had invented a gin (Pedlars Sloe Gin) that is still available today.
The second son joined the business and John was ordained. Whilst serving a curacy in Berkshire John met and married Emily and within a year they moved all the way to Ideford and their eldest son George was born (great grandfather of 3 and 6).
John was Rector of Ideford from 1856-1873 when he moved to Berrynabor where he died in 1884. He was also Prebendary and Treasurer of Exeter Cathedral.
All 7 children were born in the Rectory in Ideford opposite the church.
In continuation of this tradition Anne (3) and sister-in-law Janet (2) are both retired Vicars - but neither served in Devon!
The bellropes were new in 2020, one was donated in memory of Revd John Manley Hawker.
