For Society peal weekend.
Rung to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Alastair “Sandy” Gunn on 27th September 1919. Sandy Gunn attended Fettes College from 1933-37, then on the outbreak of the Second World War he joined the RAF. In March 1942 his Spitfire was shot down while on a solo photographic reconnaissance mission over Norway. Following his capture he was taken to a POW camp, and on 6th April 1944 he was murdered by the Gestapo for his involvement in what later became globally known as “The Great Escape”. Sandy’s Spitfire was discovered in a Norwegian peat bog in November 2018 and is currently being restored. It is hoped it will be ready to fly again by 2023. The Restoration Project Team are launching a careers based engineering programme for 14-18 year olds, on the centenary of Sandy’s birth, which will be called The Sandy Gunn Aerospace Careers Programme.
