Rung to commemorate the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic in 1919 by John “Jack“ Alcock and Arthur “Teddy” Brown. After taking off from St John’s, Newfoundland, they flew 1,980 miles landing near Clifden, Ireland and brought the first transatlantic airmail. During the 16 hour 28 minute flight in an open plane using manual navigation with instruments failing, the navigator Brown climbed out on to the wings to clear snow/ice. A few days after the flight both Alcock and Brown were honoured with a reception at Windsor Castle during which they were knighted by King George V. Rowena Mann of the neighbouring village of Molesworth is a descendent of John Alcock.
