Remembering 2nd Lieut. Frank Eales, a ringer at this tower, who died 100 years ago today.
Enlisting in the 13th Durham Light Infantry, he volunteered for active duty soon after the outbreak of war, was wounded at Pozières in 1916 and invalided home. Upon recovery Frank was gazetted 2nd Lient. 12th Rifle Brigade (The Prince Consort’s Own), returning to France only to be gassed with all his company in September 1918. Surviving this attack he again returned to France, was demobilized in February 1919 but tragically died of pneumonia following influenza contracted while returning from France. He was 24 years of age.

This performance is linked to the event Durham & Newcastle Diocesan Association — Ringing to Remember.
