Lest We Forget
Specially arranged and rung during Remembrance-tide with the bells half muffled to mark the Centenary of the Armistice. Rung remembering all those who were killed during the Great War 1914-1918, especially the 42 men & boys from this village who did not return.
We especially remember Pioneer WILLIAM PEARSON GREEN who was killed in action on 28th June 1916 aged 25 and Private GEORGE HENRY COOKE who died of wounds on 20th December 1917 aged 29. William & George were both ringers at this Church and both ringing members of this Guild.
Today’s peal replicates a peal of Grandsire Triples rung here on 9th August 1913 which both William & George rang in, it being their first peal for both of them (it was in fact the first peal for all the band except the conductor). It was the first peal rung on the bells by a local band following the restoration and augmentation of the bells up to eight in 1912. Also in the 1913 peal was Frank Dawson & Harry Green (brother of William) who both served in the Great War and survived.
Details of the 1913 peal:
We Will Remember Them!
Their Name Liveth For Evermore
When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say, For Your Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today.
Well done to all the band, it was a super effort on difficult bells! First peal on the bells for 16 years.
200th peal together: 5 & 6.
