Rung half-muffled on the 100th anniversary of the Armistice that ended WWI.
We also commemorate the centenary of the deaths of Air Mechanic 2nd Class Charles Alfred Elmer of the Royal Air Force, who died on 26th November 1918, and of Serjeant George Herbert Hall of the 2nd/4th Battalion Queen’s (Royal West Surrey Regiment) who died on 23rd December 1918, both of whom are buried in St Michael’s churchyard. We dedicate this quarter peal them today as the bells will not be in place on the specific centenary dates.
This quarter was rung at 12:30pm as part of Ringing Remembers, and prior to the Civic Service of Remembrance at St Michaels. The quarter peal together with 30 minutes of service ringing are the last ringing of the old bells before the dismantling work begins tomorrow.
