Private George Stancliffe, Blackburn, St Michael & All Angels, Lancashire. Died 31/10/1918 age 19. Lancashire Fusiliers 18th Bn. Service No.62906. Commemorated at Harlebeke New British Cemetery, Belgium, Grave I A 5. Born 16/11/1898 and baptised 18/12/1898 at St Michael & All Angels, Blackburn. One of eleven children born between 1896 and 1913. Son of James Lord Stancliffe and Elizabeth Jane Stancliffe (née Houldsworth) of Blackburn. At the time of the 1911 census, he was working as a warehouse boy in a cotton mill. Two of his brothers, also bellringers, Richard Houldsworth Stancliffe and Thomas (Tom) Stancliffe, served during WWI and survived, although Richard was invalided out and died in 1925. A memorial peal of Plain Bob Minor was rung to his and two other local ringers’ memory on 14/06/1919 at St Michael & All Angels, Blackburn, conducted by Arthur Tomlinson. On 25/09/1920, the St Michael & All Angels Parish War Memorial was unveiled, and a peal of Plain Bob Minor was rung, his brother Tom ringing the 5th to his first peal. Born: Blackburn.
