St Peter Friday, 19 October 2018 in 41m (6–1–16) 1299 Grandsire Doubles 1 Patricia Key 2 Geoff Cowling 3 Brian Holdaway 4 Ian Price 5 Lynn Scales (C) 6 Nicholas Price To commemorate the death of No. 85502 Pte Charles Leonard Powell, a former ringer at Staunton on Arrow, where he rang his first Quarter Peal of Grandsire Doubles on 16 April 1916. Charles enlisted as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers, Inland Waterways Transport Company, and was subsequently serving with the 1st/8th Btn. Durham Light Infantry. At the age of 21, he died this day in 1918 of colitis in a field hospital as a prisoner of war near Liart in the Ardennes region of France. Whilst first buried in the German cemetery, his remains were moved to his final resting place in the Sedan-Torcy French National Cemetry, and is noted on the War Memorial at Presteigne, where he was also believed to be a ringer. £3.00 3 people like this | |
