Heralding the 60th anniversary of the first Lady Peer entering the House of Lords next week, we celebrate the first lady peer to be appointed under the Life Peerages Act. Criminologist Baroness Wootton of Abinger subsequently became the first woman to sit on the Woolsack as Deputy Speaker, and authored the Wootton Report in 1968 proposing decriminalisation of possession of cannabis in small amounts.
