Rung half-muffled on the centenary of the death of William Girt. William was born in 1883 in Bildeston; by the time he enlisted, aged 27, he lived in Buxhall. He was posted to the Royal Scot Fusiliers, and sent to France, landing on 5 May 1918. By the middle of August there were signs that German resistance was weakening and the Allies began to go on the offensive. As part of the general advance, William's Division cleared Ypres in a day but he was killed in action on 30 September 1918 aged 35. He is buried in Y Farm Military Cemetery near Armentieres.
The tenor ringer is a distant relative of William Girt.
