In memory of Sapper Walter Nice, a ringer at Gestingthorpe, Essex. Died 29/04/1918 age 28. Royal Engineers. Service No.216212. Buried in Gestingthorpe (St Mary) Churchyard, grave in north-east part. Born 02/01/1890. One of six children; four surviving at the 1911 census. Son of Sarah and the late Walter Nice of Gestingthorpe. Husband of Edith Nice (née Downs), whom he married on 14/04/1917 at Gestingthorpe. At the time of the 1911 census, he was working as a gas fitter. He rang a number of peals in his local area. He died at Dover Hospital from wounds received in action on 07/04/1918 near Arras, France. Born: Gestingthorpe, Essex. Enlisted: Sible Hedingham, Essex, initially in the Essex Regiment, on 11/02/1916. Resided: Gestingthorpe, Essex.
