Rung half muffled in memory of Benjamin Henry Walden who died on 18th April 1918. Fireman Walden had been serving on board Dalegarth Force SS, a 684grt, defensively-armed British Merchant Ship. On the 18th April 1918 when on route from Treport for Barry Roads she was torpedoed by German submarines UB-86 and UB-73 when 12 miles SW from Hartland Point, North Devon. 5 lives were lost, including Fireman Benjamin Walden. Then aged 32, he was the son of Thomas Edward and Fanny Maria Walden (nee Scovell). Born on Alderney, he has no known grave but is commemorated on Tower Hill Memorial, London.
