The bells of this Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas were rung today as part of “Ringing to Remember” – the Durham & Newcastle Association of Church Bellringers First World War ringing commemoration. One hundred years ago a bellringer from St. Aidan’s, West Hartlepool died. We rang to celebrate his life and the ultimate sacrifice that he made.

Lance Corporal William Gilmore

Son of the late Samuel Gilmore and the late Elizabeth Gilmore, William was born in Castlewellan, Co. Down 19th. April 1891.

Husband of Ellen Frances Gilmore of 119, Gloucester Place, Portman Square, London. Father of John Stanley Gilmore (born in Ireland). At the time of the 1911 census, he was working as a carpenter and lived at 31, Harrow Street, West Hartlepool.

William enlisted into the Royal Engineers 150th. Field Coy. at West Hartlepool in 1915. His Service No. was 65969 and he died on 17th. April 1918 aged 27.

Commemorated at Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium, stone 8 and 162. , on the War Memorial in his birth village of Castlewellan, Co. Down, the Ringers Memorial plaque at Newcastle Cathedral and in the Central Council of Church Bellringers Roll of Honour kept below the ringing chamber at St. Paul’s Cathedral.
