Rung in memory of and in grateful thanks for paying the ultimate sacrifice of Private Arthur Whelpton who died 31 January 1918, aged 26 a former ringer at this church. Highland Light Infantry 18th Bn. Service No.41556. Commemorated at Etaples Military Cemetery, France, Grave XXXI F 8A. Arthur's parents Thomas and Elizabeth are buried in the churchyard having died in 1917 and 1933 respectively. Arthur's only child died in March 1918 aged only a few months, probably never seen by her father.
