Rung on the back five to mark the centenary of the celebratory ringing of church bells throughout the land which took place on 23rd November 1917, to celebrate the initial success by the British during the Battle of Cambrai, the largest and most significant tank battle of the First World War. This was the first time celebratory ringing had taken place on a large scale during the Great War.
The first ever tanks where designed, tested and built in Lincoln at the William Foster & Co Wellington Foundry, which stood in this parish less than half a mile from this Church, within earshot of the bells, with many of the workers living in this parish.
Remembering Foster’s Managing Director Sir William Tritton, his Chief Draftsman William Rigby and Major Walter Wilson of the War Cabinet, the designers and manufacturers of the original tank.
Rung especially remembering all those in the Tank Corps who were killed at the Battle of Cambrai.
“LINCOLN – BIRTHPLACE OF THE TANK”
(Rung also for the Lincoln Diocesan Guild)
