Also remembering Stoker 1st Class Reginald Thomas Alexander Swain, Tilehurst, Oxford Diocesan. Died 11/11/1917 age 20. Royal Navy H.M.S. Staunch. Service No.SS/117414. Commemorated at Portsmouth Naval Memorial, England, Panel 26. Born 14/05/1897. Son of Thomas Swain and Charlotte Swain of Tilehurst, Reading. He worked as a gardener before enlisting. His ship, H.M.S. Staunch, an Acron class destroyer, was sunk when she was torpedoed by the German submarine UC-38 off Deir el-Balah, Gaza. He was one of eight casualties from that ship. Also sunk at the same time was the monitor H.M.S. M15 with the loss of 26 of her crew. Born: Swallowfield, Berkshire. Enlisted: On 16/11/1915. Resided (1911 census): East View, Downing Road, Tilehurst.
