To commemorate the brave action of Pte Thomas Henry Sage VC who on this day in 1917 smothered a grenade that had fallen back into their trench, thereby saving the lives of six men.
Miraculously surviving after being peppered with shrapnel and making it back to the rear echelon, he returned to Tiverton to a heroes welcome and was awarded the Victoria Cross. Pte Sage passed away in 1945.
A commemorative stone on the wall of the War Memorial was unveiled to mark the 100th anniversary of his selfless act.
May he rest in eternal peace.
Special thanks to Catherine Thorpe, Ian Campbell, Martin Mansley & Richard Johnston for making this QP possible, we are most grateful to you all.
