We Will Remember You!
Specially arranged and rung by the local band with the bells half muffled to commemorate the centenary of the death of Private KENNETH DYKES, who was killed in action on the first day of Passchendaele, 31st July 1917 at the age of 19, whilst serving in the Lincolnshire Regiment 2nd Battalion. Kenneth is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial at Ypres.
Kenneth was a bell ringer at this Church, being a member of the local band until he enlisted. He also joined the Lincoln Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers and is commemorated on the Guild War Memorial in the Ringers Chapel at Lincoln Cathedral.
Kenneth was born in Nocton, son of George & Emma Dykes and is commemorated on the village War Memorial which is on the west wall at the back of the Church. His two older brothers Richard & George both served in and survived the Great War.
Prior to the quarter a candle was lit and a brief account of Kenneth was read out followed by the poem 'In Flanders Fields' and finishing with a prayer. The candle was left lit whilst the quarter was rung and following the quarter two bell shaped wreaths were laid in memory of Kenneth, one at the War Memorial in the Church and the other on the Dykes family grave in the Churchyard just under the tower.
Yvonne Woodcock (Tower Captain) wishes to be associated with this quarter.
