Rung half-muffled on the centenary of the death of Frederick Uriah Gladwell. Born in Rattlesden in 1892, lived at Redbrick Cottages, Buxhall. Enlisted in York in 1915 and posted as Private 17/510 to the 17th (Service) Battalion (North East Railway Pioneers) Northumberland Fusiliers. Posted to France and arrived at Le Havre on 21 November 1915. In October 1916, his battalion became attached to GHQ as a Railway Construction Unit. Frederick was one of two 17th Battalion fatalities two days before the start of the Battle of Passchendaele, killed in action on 29 July 1917 aged 25. Private Gladwell is buried in Gwalia Cemetery, Ieper, Belgium.
