Today the bells of this Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas were ringing as part of “Ringing to Remember” the Durham & Newcastle Association of Church Bellringers First World War Ringing Commemoration.
On this day one hundred years ago a bellringer from Allendale Church was killed. We ring to celebrate his life and the ultimate sacrifice that he made.
Private Archibald Hetherington ( Archie )
Archie was the son of Peter & Jane Hetherington, of Cross Keys House, Allendale where he was born. He enlisted at Newcastle upon Tyne and joined the 19th. Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He was married in Sunderland shortly before he left to fight. Archie is buried at St. Mary’s Church in Masham in the South West of the graveyard. His name is recorded on the ringers plaque in this Cathedral.
Archie Hetherington we have remembered you
