Cathedral Sunday, 24 May 2015 in 49m (8–0–02) 1260 Plain Bob Minor 1 Mary White 2 Joanne Ayre 3 J Geoff White 4 Richard Grainger 5 Howard E J Smith (C) 6 Edmund P Crowdy Today the bells of this Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas where rung as part of “Ringing to Remember” the Durham & Newcastle Association of Church Bellringers First World War Ringing Commemoration. On this day one hundred years ago a bellringer from St. Cuthbert’s Church at Darlington was killed. We ring to celebrate his life and the ultimate sacrifice that he made. Private Jack Stewart Born in Darlington, Jack was the son of Henry and Ann J. Stewart living at 47, Corporation Road. He enlisted at Northallerton and was part of “W” Company 4th. Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Jack is remembered on the Ypres ( Menin Gate ) Memorial, Belgium, Panel 33. His name is recorded on the ringers plaque in this Cathedral.
