On this day one hundred years ago a bellringer from St. Oswins Church at Wylam was killed. We ring to celebrate his life and the ultimate sacrifice that he made. PRIVATE JOSEPH FOSTER APPLEBY Ringer at St Oswin, Wylam. Enlisted with the 3rd. /4th. Battalion (transferred to 1st./4th. Battalion (Territorials), Northumberland Fusiliers, Service No. 2599. Died on 18 September 1916 aged 24. Buried in Heilly Station Cemetery, Méricourt-l’Abbé, Grave IV E9. Joseph was married to Elizabeth Mary Jackson of Ovington Cottage Lodge, Ovington, Prudhoe Station, Northumberland. After Joseph’s death, Elizabeth remarried and became Elizabeth Mary Waugh.
