Rung half–muffled in memory of Sapper Ralph Bowes, no. 470784 of 1/3rd Durham (Fortress) Royal Engineers. He was killed by a German sniper in a battle for a small copse on the Somme on 14 July 1916, aged 36. His name appears on the Thiepval Memorial, a shrine in France to the 72,000-plus missing British and South African men who died in the Battles of the Somme between 1915 and 1918 who have no known grave. Sapper Bowes is the great grandfather of Buxhall resident, Arthur Hicks.

This performance is linked to the event Buxhall, Suffolk: In memoriam our fallen (1914-1918)
