World War II forced itself onto Australia’s mainland for the first time, when Japanese aircraft mounted a deadly air raid on Darwin, dropping more bombs than were used in the attack on Pearl Harbour. The loss of life and devastation was profound. This attack marked the first of at least 64 air raids on Northern Australia and attacks continued until 12 November 1943. On this day as on Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, we reflect on our past, pay tribute to the service men and women who courageously defended our country, and remember all those who were affected by the war fought over Northern Australia. It was also devastating for the local Aboriginal community, their land had already been taken from them, and with the bombs it was being destroyed. The Day also embraces reconciliation as Indigenous and non-Indigenous people fought side-by-side to protect our country and Aboriginal people are now being recognised for their contribution to the War effort. Darwin is also a place of reconciliation with the Japanese people who have now become one of our most trusted and loyal friends in which to create a world of human dignity, human rights, and the rights of nations to live free of coercion and bullying. Lest we forget. St Andrew’s is the Garrison Church of the 41st Battalion, Royal New South Wales Regiment.
