In Memory of Geoff Cawley, former Tower Captain, who died yesterday morning as a result of a stroke. Geoff was in the first group of learners at Lismore back in 2002. As a person who took up bellringing later in life, he gained great enjoyment in his new found interest and was keen to achieve as much as he could. He rang a Peal at the age of 78, something he never thought he would be able to do. In total, he rang one Peal, 4 Half-Peals and 159 Quarter Peals.
Geoff was born and grew up in Lismore and returned as a local G.P. As well as his medical practice, Geoff spent enormous amounts of his time involved in civic activities in Lismore as well as his deep commitment to St Andrew's Anglican Church.
Geoff is well remembered by all and as bellringers we will miss him too.

Rung Half-muffled in memory of Geoff Cawley, Tower Captain from 2009 - 2017. Geoff's funeral was held last Monday (5th August 2019) and after the tenor tolled 84 times, half-muffled call changes on 8 were rung culminating in reverse rounds, a favourite change of Geoff's. Geoff was one of the first group of learners when the bells were installed in 2002. He rang his first (and only) Peal at the age of 78, a feat he never imagined he would be able to achieve. He also rang 4 Half-peals and 159 Quarter-peals, his last Q being on 9th April 2017.
Geoff was a local GP and seemed to know just about everybody in Lismore, after all he delivered a few generations of babies. Geoff was very active in community work especially things musical including Musica Viva and Opera at The Channon. He worked to raise funds for many charities and was active in Rotary. He was a member of St Andrew's Choir and had been a Church Warden and Synod member.
We greatly miss Geoff's lively presence in the tower and his stories told in the pub (Rous Hotel opposite the tower) after practices. Geoff felt that the ringers should celebrate more and introduced a custom of bottles of sparkling wine in the tower after important occasions. We remember the time Geoff dropped an empty bottle coming down the tower stairs and the feelings of impending disaster, when a miracle occurred and bottle bounced on the stone floor without breaking.
Vale Dr Geoff Cawley, you are sadly missed.
