Rung half-muffled before a 75th anniversary commemoration service for Flying Fortress B17F No 42-5903 ('Ascend Charlie') of 571 Squadron 390 Bomb Group US 8th Air Force, which crashed into high ground 3 miles north of this church on the night of September 16th 1943 with the loss of all ten men, aged between 19 and 28. They were returning damaged and with two wounded men to their base in Framlingham, Suffolk, from a mission over occupied Europe when they encountered severe weather that contributed towards the accident.
Relatives of four of the crewmen attended, visited the crash-site memorial and took active parts in this service. They came from the United States (from Alaska, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Washington State, California and Texas), from Canada and from Sweden.
Also to remember Flying Fortress B17 no 42-5906 ('Sondra Kay') of 388 Bomb Group based in Knettishall, Norfolk, which crashed shortly afterwards on the slopes of Rhiw Gwraidd between Llanyre and Rhayader - again with the loss of all ten crew.
