Service No.139513. Commemorated at Etaples Military Cemetery, France, Grave XXXIII A 6. Born 3rd quarter 1893. One of twelve children; eleven surviving at the 1911 census. Son of William Henry Mann and Eliza Ann Mann of 51 West Street, Leominster. At the time of the 1911 census he was working as a carpenter, following in his father’s footsteps. Born: Leominster. Enlisted: Leominster, initially in the Shropshire Light Infantry, Service No.19796. Resided (1911 Census): 51 West Street, Leominster.

He was awarded his Military Medal for bravery in the field on 18/08/1916, on the Somme. At the time mention was made that “he has already been through six engagements un-hurt”.

To commemorate the death of No. 85502 Pte Charles Leonard Powell, a former ringer at Staunton on Arrow, where he rang his first Quarter Peal of Grandsire Doubles on 16 April 1916. Charles enlisted as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers, Inland Waterways Transport Company, and was subsequently serving with the 1st/8th Btn. Durham Light Infantry. At the age of 21, he died this day in 1918 of colitis in a field hospital as a prisoner of war near Liart in the Ardennes region of France. Whilst first buried in the German cemetery, his remains were moved to his final resting place in the Sedan-Torcy French National Cemetry, and is noted on the War Memorial at Presteigne, where he was also believed to be a ringer.

To commemorate the centenary of the death of Pte Charles Robert James, a former ringer at this tower. 35758 Pte James of the 5th Bn Yorkshire Regiment died aged 19 on 23rd October 1918 whilst a prisoner of war. He is commemorated at Berlin South-Western Cemetery, Germany, Grave XVIII B7.
