Charles enlisted as a Sapper in the Royal Engineers, Inland Waterways Transport Company, and was subsequently serving with the 1st/8th Btn. Durham Light Infantry. At the age of 21, he died this day in 1918 of colitis in a field hospital as a prisoner of war near Liart in the Ardennes region of France. Whilst first buried in the German cemetery, his remains were moved to his final resting place in the Sedan-Torcy French National Cemetry, and is noted on the War Memorial at Presteigne, where he was also believed to be a ringer.
