During his visit to Rhodes University in 2002 Heaney processed with the robed Vice-Chancellor, staff and students, from the University to the cathedral where he read some of his poems in the candlelit building: every pew was full and many students stood in the aisles. After the reading there was another procession to the Parish Hall for tea, during which all ten bells were rung. Heaney expressed great pleasure when told that the bells had rung in his honour. 'I suppose the next time will be when I am laid to rest', he said. The ringer of the second organised the ringing at Grahamstown and promised Heaney that, if at all possible, bells would be rung: 'when you are laid to rest'.
