He went on to master the difficult carillon technique of striking the keyboard with his fists and pressing the pedal operated claviers with his feet to produce an extraordinary sound from the carillon’s 55 bells. For many years there was no lift or air-conditioning in the carillon and in the summer heat and winter chill, George performed a repertoire of popular and classical works that brought joy to locals and visitors alike for over 30 years. George was presented with the Order of Australia by the Australian government in recognition for his contribution to music and it was George who instigated the campaign to rename the Canberra Carillon the National Carillon. Visitors to Croydon Minster today include cousins Margaret Lynch and Sylvana Magalova-Evans. Margie is visiting England for the first time in 40 years with her husband Tony. Sylvana has sponsored today’s peal in memory of their ‘Uncle’ George and feels that he would very much enjoy the bells of Croydon Minster, the organ music and to hear his little cousin, Chorister Luca Evans, sing at Evensong.
