This was followed by the consumption of the now traditional bottle of Champagne for the ringers and Chocolate cake. Rung by the local band on Plough Monday to celebrate the traditional start of the English agricultural year, this being a farming estate/community. Lord Ripon lived at Nocton Hall and owned the Nocton Estate. All Saints Church was built as a memorial to Lord Ripon and the peal of six bells were given by his wife Lady Sarah Albinia Louisa, Countess of Ripon in 1865 in memory of him. He was a former Chancellor of the Exchequer as well as a former Prime Minster, and is buried in the family vault here under All Saints. Rung with the bells fully muffled in memory of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, marking the 71st anniversary of her accession to the throne (6th Feb 1952). Today’s quarter peal was specially organised to be rung on the anniversary of the peal of Minor rung fully muffled on these bells on 9th Feb 1952 (three days after the Accession) which was rung in memory of her farther His late Majesty King George VI. It was originally hoped that a fully muffled peal would be attempted today in memory of Queen Elizabeth II, replicating the peal rung for her father, however due to ill health a quarter peal was rung instead by a mainly local band. Rung as the family congregated at his home in the village (within earshot of the bells) prior to his funeral, with the funeral cortege passing the Church whilst we were ringing on its way to the Crematorium. Gerald was a long standing resident of Branston, and was a member of the local band of ringers here at All Saints. He rang six peals, five of them here at All Saints. We can only hope that Scampton and more importantly their memory and heritage is preserved and respected at RAF Scampton! Rung on the back three (the original three) on Lady Day to mark the end of the ringing of the Culfrey Bell (the tenor) each evening at 7pm between Michaelmas Day & Lady Day, a local tradition dating back to the seventeenth century to help guide lost travellers off the heath to the safety of the village. The bells were rung up to 7pm, after which the Culfrey Bell (the tenor) was rung for 10 mins. The Culfrey Trust still provide new bell ropes for the Culfrey Bell, upkeep the Church clock which took over the ringing of the bell, and provide two bungalows for elder parishioners called the Culfrey Bungalows on the site of the old Culfrey Cottages. The bells were rung up to 7pm, after which the Culfrey Bell (the tenor) was rung for 10 mins. The Culfrey Trust still provide new bell ropes for the Culfrey Bell, upkeep the Church clock which took over the ringing of the bell, and provide two bungalows for elder parishioners called the Culfrey Bungalows on the site of the old Culfrey Cottages. Taught by the late Jim Sutherland, Tower Captain at Wragby, on the treble stood on a pile of boxes at the top of the spiral staircase in the old ringing chamber. This quarter is dedicated in memory of Jim Sutherland of Wragby and Ron Applewhite of Potterhanworth. Jim taught Chris to handle a bell and basic method ringing. Ron (who also attended the practice 25 years ago) drove Chris around to various Practice Nights each week and taught him more advanced method ringing. All Saints Church was built as a memorial to Lord Ripon and the peal of six bells were given by his wife Lady Sarah Albinia Louisa, Countess of Ripon in 1865 in memory of him. The dedication of the Church was changed from St Peter’s to All Saints in honour of the Earl as he was born on All Saints Day.
