Ringing during the 35 minutes after midnight included: Kings, Rounds & Call Changes, sixty on thirds and three bursts of firing on the bells in celebration.

This was followed by the consumption of the now traditional bottle of Champagne for the ringers and Chocolate cake.

The traditional early morning ringing at Blankney on Plough Monday, and the first ringing on the bells in the New Year.

Rung by the local band on Plough Monday to celebrate the traditional start of the English agricultural year, this being a farming estate/community. Plough Monday was customarily a big day of celebration throughout the whole of Lincolnshire.

‘God Spede the Plough’

Rung by the local band with the bells half muffled to mark the anniversary of the death of The Right Honourable Frederick John Robinson, first Earl of Ripon, who died on 28th January 1859.

Lord Ripon lived at Nocton Hall and owned the Nocton Estate. All Saints Church was built as a memorial to Lord Ripon and the peal of six bells were given by his wife Lady Sarah Albinia Louisa, Countess of Ripon in 1865 in memory of him.

He was a former Chancellor of the Exchequer as well as a former Prime Minster, and is buried in the family vault here under All Saints.

Rung with the bells fully muffled in memory of Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, marking the 71st anniversary of her accession to the throne (6th Feb 1952).

Today’s quarter peal was specially organised to be rung on the anniversary of the peal of Minor rung fully muffled on these bells on 9th Feb 1952 (three days after the Accession) which was rung in memory of her farther His late Majesty King George VI.

It was originally hoped that a fully muffled peal would be attempted today in memory of Queen Elizabeth II, replicating the peal rung for her father, however due to ill health a quarter peal was rung instead by a mainly local band.

Rung by the local band with the bells half muffled in memory of GERALD THOMAS SPEED who passed away on 28th December 2022 aged 91.

Rung as the family congregated at his home in the village (within earshot of the bells) prior to his funeral, with the funeral cortege passing the Church whilst we were ringing on its way to the Crematorium.

Gerald was a long standing resident of Branston, and was a member of the local band of ringers here at All Saints. He rang six peals, five of them here at All Saints.

A touch of Grandsire Doubles in memory of Mike Pomeroy, an all round top guy, whose funeral took place today in Limerick and sending our best wishes to our friend Sue Waterfall.

80 changes of Grandsire Doubles to mark the 80th anniversary of the formation of 617 Squadron 'The Dambusters' which were based at RAF Scampton here in Lincolnshire. We can only hope that Scampton and more importantly their memory and heritage is preserved and respected at RAF Scampton!

The Annual Culfrey Ringing.

Rung on the back three (the original three) on Lady Day to mark the end of the ringing of the Culfrey Bell (the tenor) each evening at 7pm between Michaelmas Day & Lady Day, a local tradition dating back to the seventeenth century to help guide lost travellers off the heath to the safety of the village.

The bells were rung up to 7pm, after which the Culfrey Bell (the tenor) was rung for 10 mins.

The Culfrey Trust still provide new bell ropes for the Culfrey Bell, upkeep the Church clock which took over the ringing of the bell, and provide two bungalows for elder parishioners called the Culfrey Bungalows on the site of the old Culfrey Cottages.

The four hymns during the service were all ringers hymns selected by the bell ringers.

The Prayers of Intercession were based around St Dunstan, the bells and the ringers.

Cameras were placed up in the bell chamber and ringing chamber connected to TV screens down in the ground floor porch so the congregation could see the bells being rung as they entered the Church.

Viscount Chaplin was owner of Blankney Hall and the Blankney Estate and was responsible for the restoration of this Church.

The fourth bell in this tower was dedicated in memory of Sue in September 2004 after the re-hanging and augmentation of the bells, something which Sue was looking forward too but sadly never saw, passing away 2 ½ months before the bells were completed.

Sue was taught method ringing by Chris Woodcock, who called all her quarters.

The ringers of 2, 4 & 6 rang the same bells to the first quarter peal on the six bells, being Plain Bob Doubles on 20th Sept 2004.

Also marking the eighteenth anniversary of the first peal to be rung on the bells which was Plain Bob Doubles on the first anniversary (4th Sept 2005). The ringers of the second & fourth rang in the first peal.

Rung in memory of Libby Bailey to whom the third bell is dedicated, Sue Scouller (local ringer) to whom the fourth bell is dedicated, and also in memory of Ron & Molly Applewhite.

Also acknowledging our gratitude to the Keltek Trust who found the three second hand bells and donated one of them.

Today we also ring in memory of Elizabeth Manfield who sadly passed away on Wednesady. Elizabeth was a member of the congregation and lived directly next to the tower and enjoyed listening to the bells.

The Metheringham ‘Meg’ Feast has taken place since medieval times and traditionally marks the end of the Harvest and celebrates the Church’s Patronal Festival, the feast of Saint Wilfrid (12th Oct).

The feast was as usual held along the High Street centered around the Market Cross on Cross Hill and over looked by the Church.

The traditional call to the Feast, rung on the back four original bells dating from 1620, keeping up the 400 year old tradition of these bells calling the villagers to the Feast.

Rung prior to the official opening of the Feast at 2pm on Cross Hill at the Market Cross in the center of the village, and then a short burst after the opening.

The Metheringham ‘Meg’ Feast has taken place since medieval times and traditionally marks the end of the Harvest and celebrates the Church’s Patronal Festival, the feast of Saint Wilfrid (12th Oct).

Rung by the local band to celebrate the 25th anniversary to the night of the conductor learning to ring, aged 12 ready to ring in the Millennium, by attending the Friday night practice at Wragby Lincs 23/10/98. Taught by the late Jim Sutherland, Tower Captain at Wragby, on the treble stood on a pile of boxes at the top of the spiral staircase in the old ringing chamber.

This quarter is dedicated in memory of Jim Sutherland of Wragby and Ron Applewhite of Potterhanworth. Jim taught Chris to handle a bell and basic method ringing. Ron (who also attended the practice 25 years ago) drove Chris around to various Practice Nights each week and taught him more advanced method ringing.

We especially remember Pioneer WILLIAM PEARSON GREEN who was killed in action on 28th June 1916 aged 25 and Private GEORGE HENRY COOKE who died of wounds on 20th December 1917 aged 29. William & George were both ringers at this Church.

Also Gunner Harry Green (brother of William) & Aircraftsman Frank Dawson who both served in the Great War and both survived, they were both ringers at this Church.

The treble of the six in this tower was given as a War Memorial in 1919 by the farmers of Blankney as a thanksoffering for Peace.

The conductor had the privileged of giving the King, then Prince of Wales, a go at ringing one of the bells on his visit to Tattershall back in March 2018. During the visit the ringers were presented to Prince Charles, which included both Bob Hardwick & Yvonne Woodcock.

First quarter peal at first attempt for 1, Well Done Luke! 8 months after starting to learn to ring here at Potterhanworth.

Rung by the local band in memory of our friend and former ringer Joan Simpson BEM of Coningsby, around the first anniversary of her passing. Joan rang her final quarter peal here on the treble in October 2018, which the conductor called and the ringers of 3, 4 & 6 rang in, also being Plain Bob Doubles, which was especially arranged to celebrate her receiving her BEM in the 2018 New Years Honours. Joan always enjoyed encourgaing new ringers esspecially youngsters so she would have been very pleased with today's quarter being Luke's first. The band wish to associate Anne Hardwick & Bryony Curley with this quarter.
