88 Tolling
(The Death Knell & Nine Tailors - being: two lots of three for the Nine Tailors followed by 88 tolls representing the deceased's age).
6 Christopher C P Woodcock
The traditional Death Knell & Nine Tailors rung / tolled on the tenor bell as a mark of respect and in fond memory of long standing village resident JOYCE MONEY who sadly passed away a month ago, 23rd January, aged 88, and whose funeral takes place this week.
Joyce was the centre of village life in more ways than one. Not only did she live right in the centre of the village in her cottage overlooking the village green but also over the years she sat on many of the village committees. She was a great supporter of the bells and bell ringers, supporting the fundraising efforts to restore and augment the bells between 1999 & 2004. Joyce particularly enjoyed sitting in her cottage or garden just across the village green from the Church and listening to the bells being rung because she was partially sighted and her eyesight had deteriorated greatly resulting in her not being able to see much which meant she got much pleasure from listening to the bells. You soon knew if the Church clock was the wrong time as Joyce relied on the Church clock striking the hours to tell her the time due to her poor eyesight! She will be greatly missed by all in the village, she was a truly wonderful lady, a true village person (an end of an era).

73 Tolling

6 Christopher C P Woodcock
The traditional Death Knell & Nine Tailors rung / tolled on the tenor bell at 5pm as a mark of respect and in fond memory of J SAMUEL HAMMOND ‘SAM’ who sadly passed away yesterday, 25th February, aged 73.
Sam was Carillonneur at Duke University in Durham North Carolina holding the post for 53 years between 1965 up to his retirement in 2018 when the University honoured him by making him University Carillonneur Emeritus and the University carillon/instrument was renamed in his honour ‘The J Samuel Hammond Carillon’. He played the instrument each day during the week at 5pm as classes ended and twice on a Sunday around services and gave over 15,000 performances on the Duke Carillon during his lifetime. His beloved carillon/instrument is a testament to the care and attention Sam gave it over the years and is one of the finest instruments in North America, and was much loved by him – he was rightly very proud of it. He had a passion for Taylor bells, with Dukes 50 bells being cast at Loughborough in 1932 and especially loved the sound of its 5 tonne bass bell. Sam oversaw the restoration of the instrument by Taylor’s in 1992 and has carefully looked after it ever since which has kept it in fantastic condition. His legacy and spirit will continue through the sound of the Duke Carillon.
Sam was a true gent, warm, welcoming, unassuming, humble and had a heart of gold. His southern welcome and humour will be greatly missed, and it was an honour to have known him and to have called him a friend. It was lovely to meet up with him again on a recent visit to Taylor’s in 2019 whilst he was over in the UK on holiday. Rest in peace dear friend or as Sam would say Requiesce in Pace.
Tolled on our Taylor Tenor cast in 1897 – I think Sam would have approved!
(Recital played on the Duke Carillon on the evening of Sam’s death, starts at 1 min 9)
(Sam shortly before his retirement)
(the Sam I remember)

Rung with the bells open to celebrate the life of long standing village resident JOYCE MONEY whose ashes were interred in the Churchyard following this quarter peal.
The ringing took place using a combination of family members who live in the same household and social/support bubbles with social distancing observed and all the ringers wearing face coverings. Rung from our ground floor ringing chamber with the tower door to the outside fully open.

“Bishop Bob, as he was affectionately known across Greater Lincolnshire, was much loved and greatly admired for his dedication to the diocese and the people of Lincoln. He was particularly known for his commitment to rural issues and was a President of the Lincolnshire Show. He also served as Bishop for HM Prisons (1985 – 2001).”

Rung by the local band with the bells half muffled in memory of our dear friend and former local ringer Sue Scouller, who sadly passed away 17 years ago on 17th June.
The fourth bell in this tower was dedicated in memory of Sue in September 2004 after the re-hanging and augmentation of the bells, something which Sue was looking forward too but sadly never saw, passing away 2 ½ months before the bells were completed.
Sue was taught method ringing by the conductor, who called all her quarters.
Ray Cucksey wishes to be associated with this ringing.
Rung also in memory of Geoffrey F Bryant ‘Geoff’ of Barton-upon-Humber, friend of the conductor, whose memorial service took place today at St Mary’s Barton, attended by the conductor. He will be greatly missed and ringing will be the poorer without his cheerful unassuming helpful nature.
We decided to attempt an eighth rather than a quarter to ease ourselves back in (and we were pleased we had decided that with it being so hot this evening).

The Annual Culfrey Quarter Peal.
Rung on the back three (the original three) on Michaelmas Day to mark the start of the ringing of the Culfrey Bell (the tenor) each evening at 7pm between Michaelmas Day & Lady Day, a local tradition dating back to the seventeenth century to help guide lost travellers off the heath to the safety of the village.
This quarter was rung up to 7pm, after which the Culfrey Bell (the tenor) was rung for 10 mins.
The Culfrey Trust still provide new bell ropes for the Culfrey Bell, upkeep the Church clock which took over the ringing of the bell, and provide two bungalows for elder parishioners called the Culfrey Bungalows on the site of the old Culfrey Cottages.

Rung by the local band as part of the national ‘Ring Out for COP26’.
For the occasion we rang a specially composed symbolic piece of ringing, which consisted of:
The first part contains chaotic ringing with the bells ringing randomly building up to the point where all the bells are firing together. This is to represent the chaos climate change is having on our planet.
The second part contains the more mournful ringing with whole pull and stand being rung followed by the tenor tolling on its own. This is to represent the death of the planet and the damage being done.
The third part contains the building up of the bells one at a time into rounds repeated a number of times then into the more joyful ringing consisting of call changes which is to represent rebirth and hope for a better planet in the future as we tackle climate control.
An explanation of the ringing was posted on the village facebook page and has received many positive comments.
This was not political ringing it was ringing to celebrate God’s creation!

The Annual Village Benefactors Memorial Quarter Peal.
Rung with the bells half muffled by the local band in memory of two of Potterhanworth’s most significant residents/benefactors, who both died on 24th Nov but 250 years apart.
Dr RICHARD SMITH, Lord of the Manor, (died on 24th November 1602), who set up & founded the Christ’s Hospital Endowment for the young people of this village, originally funding them to attend the Bluecoat school in Lincoln, Christ’s Hospital School which he founded. The Endowment now gives out annual grants to the village children each Christmas Eve towards educational expenses and extra curricular activities.
Revd ARTHUR HENRY ANSON (died 24th November 1859), who was Rector of this Parish from 4th May 1847 up to his death on 24th November 1859. Reverend Anson was a great friend to the village of Potterhanworth and was responsible for the rebuilding of the present Church in 1856, the building of the new village school known as the “Anson School” in 1855 and the re-hanging of the original three bells (the present back three) in 1858.
