In memory of John George Hill Roberts who was a telegraphist on HM Submarine H10, Royal Navy. He died on or about the 14th January 1918 aged 19. John was the son of John W. and Sarah Grace Roberts, of Clipstone Archway, Edwinstowe. His father John worked as a forester woods foreman. He had an elder sister Grace M, and a younger sister Kathleen M.
John William Roberts and Sarah Grace Skepper (or Skipper) married in Horncaslte, Lincs in 1895. In 1911, they were living in the Archway Clipstone Edwinstowe, Notts. where John William was employed as an estate forester. Records show that son, John George had been educated at Prestatyn and Mansfield and following became an apprentice carpenter, possibly on the Welbeck estate.
John George was 17 when he volunteered for the Royal Navy on 14th May 1915. His first ship was the training ship, H M S Ganges where he trained as a telegraphist. He then served on depot shop HMS Alecto until joining submarine H 10. H 10 sailed on 6th January 1918 to cruise and patrol the N.W. of Vlieland in the North Sea. She was expected back about noon 14th January 1918 but failed to arrive. It was then considered lost at sea, the actual date unknown so loss is assumed to be the `Paying-off date' of 29th January 1918. None of the 26 crews bodies were recovered and their names appear on the Portsmouth War Memorial, on the 29th panel.

First peal in the method.
Specially arranged and rung to mark the centenary of the death of Bertie Skelton, former ringer at this Church, the last of the three Cuckney ringers to lose their lives during the Great War.
Rung with the bells half muffled as a mark of respect to commemorate the centenary of Private Bertie Skelton being killed in action in France on 21st March 1918 aged 20, whilst serving in The Prince of Wales’s (North Staffordshire Regiment) 2nd/5th Battalion.
Bertie Skelton was one of ten ringers at Norton Cuckney in 1914 forming the new local band to ring on the new bells after they were augmented at Easter 1914 by the Duke of Portland, and Bertie and the other nine Norton Cucnkey ringers joined the North Nottinghamshire Association as probationary members (a member who is able to ring his bell well in rounds).
Bertie worked on the Welbeck Estate, Norton Cuckney Church being one of the Estate Churches, and he is commemorated on the Welbeck Estate War Memorial in the Welbeck Abbey private Chapel.
Honourable age does not depend on length of days, nor is the number of years a true measure of life.
We Will Remember You!
Attributed also to the ‘old’ North Nottinghamshire Association.
More info about Bertie Skelton can be found at http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/rollofhonour/People/Details/22876

He was Drafted to the 10th Battalion Sherwood Foresters and they left for Boulogne, landing on the morning of 15th July 1915. They served with various companies in France. It is reported that the battalion left the battlefields of Passchendaele on the 14th December 1917 moving to relieve the 2/8th Foresters on 20th December 1917. It is further reported that the battalion was encamped in huts behind the line near the village of Bertincourt where hostilities were engaged. By late evening of 23rd March 1918, William and his comrades were in huts about three miles south west of Bertincourt close to the hamlet of Villiers au Floss. At approx. 5.00am, the enemy broken through Bertincourt and the battalion was ordered to retreat to hold the line at Rocquigny. The enemy bombarded the troops holding Rocquigny . During the hostilities casualties within the 10th battalion were 46 killed, 125 wounded with 52 missing. Sadly William lost his life during the actions at Rocquingny. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial.
L/Corporal Albert Brown. 13399. Machine Gun Corps (Infantry)
Killed in Action 21st March 1918
Albert was born in Blidworth in 1895. He enlisted in the summer of 1917 into the kings royal Rifle Corps but was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps due to the heavy losses at Passchendaele. Records show that Albert and A Company were part of the 16th battalion machine Gun Corps formed on the 9th March 1918 and was stationed near Arras on a fifty mile front to the south.
On 21st March, as dawn broke, the enemy artillery opened a bombardment of fire on the British lines with a barrage of high explosive and gas shells. Visibility was down to 100yards and many of the shelling from both sides were firing at invisible targets. The enemy attacked the village of Ronssoy at approx. 9.30am and the 7th Royal Irish were lost to a man. The advancing enemy in droves by-passed small pockets of the 16th Irish holding strong points and redoubts who were left isolated and incapable of supporting each other.
Albert could have been one of those holding such isolated positions. It is reported that from the battle between 21st March and 3rd April, 7,149 officers and other ranks were killed.
Lance corporal Brown was killed in action on the first day. Of the 170,500 officers and men who served in the Machine Gun Corps over 62,000 became casualties.
Lance Corporal Albert Brown is buried at St Emilie Cemetery, Villers-Faucon, France.
Private Joseph Creswell Godfrey 268532. 2/7 Battalion Sherwood Foresters.
Killed in Action 21st March 1918.
Joseph was born in Blidworth in 1895. He enlisted in 1917 at Mansfield and posted into the 1/7th Sherwood Foresters (Robin Hood) battalion of 139th Brigade of the 46th Division. The division held several positions during the autumn and winter of 1917 and early 1918, but on 29th March Joseph and the 59th division were holding a two mile front line from south of Bullecourt to Norcuil near Arras.
On morning of 21st March, the German Spring Offensive “Operation Michael” commenced with massive five hour preliminary artillery bombardment with gas and shells.
Joseph serving with C company and his brave comrades engaged in close combat fighting with the enemy before being overrun. By 10am the enemy had broken through the Foresters left and right flanks. The German artillery then began shelling other positions beyond the front lines down the Hironddelle Valley towards Noreuil.
Privet Joseph C Godfrey was killed in this battle. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Bay 7, France.
Information on the above was extracted from local historian Tom Murrays publication "Remembered in Silence".

Celebrating 70 years of ringing for the Treble ringer, who was taught to ring at St. Giles by her eldest brother, Peter White. The vicar at the time, Rev. Kirton, asked Peter to form a new band, since the pre-war band had not reformed. With help from two ringers at St. Mary’s, Newark, a band of teenagers was ringing in time for Easter in 1948. Beryl is still an active ringer. Unfortunately, Peter could not ring, due to recent health problems. Also rung as a compliment to the ringer of 2, who retired recently.

A comment from the publication of Tom Murray (local historian) states:- Mr and Mrs Hadgkiss received the sad news at the loss of their 19 year old son who was classed as "missing on 4th September". On the 7th October a Church of England Chaplin was walking through the battlefields when he came across the body of the Blidworth lad. He wrote a letter to the family stating that he had given their son a reverent burial.

Specially arranged and rung in memory of Frederick ‘ Fred’ Pembleton, bell hanger from Glapwell, marking the first anniversary of his passing (4th Sept 2017).
Fred was tower captain at this Church and was responsible for the rehanging of the bells in the mid 1970s which led to him setting up his own bell hanging business from his home in Glapwell. Ault Hucknall was his leading peal tower with a total of 44.
The ringers of 2, 5, 6 & 7 rang in peals with Fred, with Derek ringing 107 peals with him.
Fred’s funeral took place at this Church last year (29th Sept 2017) when all but 3 & 4 rang in the memorial quarter following his funeral. The band wish to associate Peter Hayward & Brynley Richards with this peal, being the other two ringers who rang in Fred’s funeral quarter.
First peal in the method for all the band.

Rung on the 100th anniversary of William Henry Johnson's brave action during an attack on the village of Ramicourt for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross and the French Médaille militaire.
His VC citation reads:
For most conspicuous bravery at Ramicourt on the 3rd of October, 1918.
When his platoon was held up by a nest of enemy machine guns at very close range, Sjt. Johnson worked his way forward under very heavy fire, and single-handed charged the post, bayoneting several gunners and capturing two machine guns. During this attack he was severely wounded by a bomb, but continued to lead forward his men.
Shortly afterwards the line was once more held up by machine guns. Again he rushed forward and attacked the post singlehanded. With wonderful courage he bombed the garrison, put the guns out of action, and captured the teams.
He showed throughout the most exceptional gallantry and devotion to duty.
First peal in the method: Ramicourt Alliance Major.

During the advance Private Townroe was wounded and taken to the rear. Quote from a letter to his wife of six weeks from Private F Murphy " I am sorry to relate the last hours of your husband. When we picked him up we found there wasn't much chance of life left in him, the poor lad knew it himself...… I am please to say he was not in much pain, from the time he was hit, which would be around 12 midday, Sunday 10th November, he was conscious till 9pm. When I noticed a great change in him. He asked for a drink and told me to write to you. Then he asked to be moved and he never spoke again. We buried him with nine other men in a place called Asquillier……. Private Arthur Townroe is buried in Cement House Cemetery, XV11.B22 Ypres, Belgium.
