Rung to commemorate the death of Private James Walker 42300, 9th Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers, killed in action 16th August 1917. Killed during the "Langemark" offensive at Hill 35. Private Walker has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.

Rung in memory of Frederick ‘Fred’ Pembleton who passed away earlier this week (4th Sept). Fred rehung these bells in 1994 when they were augmented from 3 to 6.

The ringers of: 2, 3, 4, 5 & 7 all rang in peals with Fred, with Derek ringing 107 peals with him.

Rung to mark the centenary of the death of Rifleman Ralph Boness A/2835, 7th Battalion Kings Royal Rifle Corps, died of wounds on 18th September 1917 Ralph was one of 15 in a working party detailed to reconnoiter the enemy trenches close to Bethlehem Farm, near Messines Ridge (south of Ypres) on 12th September 1917, to cut wire and capture the enemy for interrogation purposes. On their return just before daylight and only a few yards from the safety of their own trenches the enemy shelled the party. A shell exploded over them killing 4 and wounding 7, of which Ralph was one. He was taken behind the lines but died of wounds on 18th September.

Rung to commemorate the death of Gunner William Timmons 77551, 160th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, Killed during the third battle of Ypres near Polygon Wood on 30th September 1917. Gunner William Timmons is buried in the Huts Cemetery, Dickebursch, Belgium.

Specially arranged and rung to mark the centenary of the death of William Henry Hakes, former ringer at this Church, the second of three Cuckney ringers to lose their lives during the Great War.

Rung with the bells half muffled as a mark of respect to commemorate the centenary of Private William Henry Hakes being killed in action in Belgium on 6th October 1917 aged 22, whilst serving in the South Staffordshire Regiment 1st Battalion.

William Hakes was one of ten ringers at Norton Cuckney in 1914 forming the new local band to ring on the new bells after they were augmented at Easter 1914 by the Duke of Portland, and William and the other nine Norton Cucnkey ringers joined the North Nottinghamshire Association as probationary members (a member who is able to ring his bell well in rounds).

The peal was rung today as the date of his death recorded on the War Memorial in Church and on the Hakes Family grave in the Churchyard states 4th October 1917, however his death is recorded by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission as 6th October 1917.

Honourable age does not depend on length of days, nor is the number of years a true measure of life.

Rung on the first anniversary of the death of Margaret Irene Brooke (1924-2016) of Southwell. Averham was a favourite church of Margaret’s locally and her son, Dr Chris Brooke, has been a great supporter of the church for many years as Diocesan Archaeological Advisor. Thanks to Canon David Keene for leading prayers in remembrance of Margaret prior to the Quarter and to Michelle Pepper for the delicious home-made cake afterwards.

In memoriam Private Norman Henry Bowyer 29035 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment.He died on 24th October 1917 aged 19. His name is recorded on the Tyne Cot Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.He was the son of Benjamin E J Bowyer and the late Hannah Bowyer of West Lane Edwinstowe. In 1911 when his mother was alive, they lived at Church St Edwinstowe. His father, a garedener, was born in High Laver and his mother came from Bermondsey, London. Nowan was born in Chertsey, Surrey and had three brothers, Benjamin Edward George,Donald William and Richard Alexander, born in Lincoln and Swinderby, and two sisters Elsie and Winifred Elizabeth.

Norman's Great nephews Clive and John and John's wife Louise were present and listened to the Quarter being rung.

Rung to celebrate the Ruby Wedding Anniversary of Peter and Barbara Arkley, parents of (2), who were married at St Michael & All Angels, Houghton-le-Spring on 22.10.1977. Thank you to all who rang.

Rung to commemorate the death of Private Percy Ulyett 59668, 15th Battalion Sherwood Foresters. Killed in action 20th October 1917 whilst preparing new artillery positions near Boesinghe village four miles north of Ypres. A memorial notice published in the Mansfield Advertiser two years after his death on 6th November 1919 states "Recalls a pleasant and honoured Blidworth man, we remember him as he went on his rounds for an insurance society, as he served with great loyalty to the Parish Church. Most of all to his much loved home and remember him as a man of whom we are all proud". Private Ulyett has no known grave and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, panels 99-102, Ypres.

Remembering Driver Alfred Welton of Stafford, 163 Co. Army Service Corps, died 24th November 1917, great uncle of the 3rd ringer. He is buried in the Lembet Road cemetery, Salonica, Greece, plot 1287.
