David and Flick Warwick would like to associate this peal with David's grandfather, Shirley Burton, who was a ringer at Leicester Cathedral and would have rung on these bells when they were in the tower at St. Mark's Leicester before they became unringable. Seven of the bells from St Mark's form part of the ring of 12 at Goulburn. A nice connection with our tour.

Specially arranged and rung on the eve of the centenary of the death of John Joseph Hakes, former ringer at this Church, the first of three Cuckney ringers to lose their lives during the Great War.
Rung with the bells half muffled as a mark of respect to commemorate the centenary of Private John Joseph Hakes being killed in action in the Somme region on 7th April 1917 aged 19, whilst serving in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derby Regiment) 2nd/8th Battalion.
John Hakes was one of ten ringers at Norton Cuckney in 1914 forming the new local band to ring on the new bells after they were augmented at Easter 1914 by the Duke of Portland, and John and the other nine Norton Cucnkey ringers joined the North Nottinghamshire Association as probationary members (a member who is able to ring his bell well in rounds).
Honourable age does not depend on length of days, nor is the number of years a true measure of life.

At the time of Albert’s death the Minster possessed the old heavy 27 cwt anti-clockwise eight which were rung from the old gallery, these not being recast and augmented to twelve until 1961. Today’s peal was rung on the light eight (bells 2 – 9 plus flat 6th).

Rung after a failed peal attempt.
Specially arranged and rung on the eve of the centenary of the death of George Arthur Turner, former ringer at this Church, who lost his life during the Great War.
Rung to commemorate the centenary of Private George Arthur Turner being killed in action in France on 7th May 1917 aged 19, whilst serving in the East Yorkshire Regiment (Duke of York’s Own) 10th Battalion.
George Turner was a member of the North Nottinghamshire Association and rang at West Retford. He rang a number of handbell peals during 1915 which included his first peal. On 11th June 1916 George rang the fourth at West Retford to a peal of Plain Bob Minor half muffled in memory of Lord Kitchener. This was his (and four other band members) first tower bell peal. This was his last peal before he was called up on 16th September 1916 and being killed on 7th May 1917.
Honourable age does not depend on length of days, nor is the number of years a true measure of life.
We Will Remember You!
Attributed also to the ‘old’ North Nottinghamshire Association.
