Sydney was a farm labourer and was born in Sheffield. He had two younger sisters, Alice and Phyllis Ada and two younger brothers, Ernest and Clarence. A quarter peal was rung as part of an International ringing event in support of Leukaemia cancer research, where 200 churches and twenty five cathedrals across the UK and rest of the world including Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, USA, Hawaii, Ireland and Canada took part. Julie McDonnell arranged the event to help fund vital research and give other blood cancer sufferers a chance of life. The aim was to raise £100,000 and to add 1,000 potential stem cell donors to the Anthony Nolan and associated registers. Fred was born in Edwinstowe, son of Maria and the late Samuel Rabbitt of High Street Edwinstowe. He was married to Edith Harriet Rabbitt, nee Marison in 1914, and lived at 30, Gilbert Rd., Bircotes, Harworth, Nottinghamshire. Both Fred and his brother Harry worked as Labourers in the Woods. His brother Harry was killed earlier in the war fighting in Gallipoli. Fred had two further brothers, William, an Assistant overseer for the Poor Law Authority, and Archie a Painter Decorator and three Sisters Theresa, Ida and Ivy -all domestic servants.
