Rung in memory of James R Taylor, who learnt to ring at St Paul's Bedford and became one of Bedfordshire's finest ringers. He lived in the Bristol area for many years and took part in many first peals of multi-method Spliced and all-the-work Spliced, including the first peal of Steven Chandler's composition of 23 all-the-work, every lead different, in 1974. RIP.

Dedicated to the memory of Corporal John William Barker, ringer at Bedford, St Paul’s, Killed in action 06/11/1918 age 37. Tank Corps 1st Gun Carrier Coy. Service No.306600. Commemorated at St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France, Grave S III S 22. He was a prolific peal ringer, ringing his first peal at Kempston, the treble to 7 Minor on 03/04/1897 at age 16. Peals in 1897 followed at St Peter’s Bedford, St Paul’s Bedford (4 peals), Dunstable, Sharnbrook, Thurleigh, Irthlingborough, Kempston (2 further peals), Houghton Conquest, St Mary’s Bedford (2 peals), Sandy and Gamlingay. His peals in 1898 included a handbell peal of Grandsire Triples where he rang 1.-2, conducted by Charles W. Clarke. He continued to ring many peals through to 1914, a number of which he conducted. He rang a peal of Stedman Caters with The Society of Royal Cumberland Youths at St Paul’s Bedford on 11/05/1912 and he called the first peal on the recast ring at Biggleswade, Grandsire Triples on 09/08/1913. He produced a number of peal compositions including Plain Bob Major, Superlative S Major, Stedman Triples, Double Norwich CB Major, Caters and Royal along with Kent TB Major and Royal, a number of them published in “The Bell News”. In the 1891 census he was aged 10, born Yorkshire, a scholar, resident with his parents, Joseph and Eluma Goddard, at Altofts Terrace, Normanton, Wakefield, Yorkshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 30, born Normanton, Yorkshire, serving soldier, Sergeant, 1st Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment, unmarried, billeted at Connaught Barracks, Rawal Pindi, Punjab, India. Buried in BOULOGNE EASTERN CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot III. Row D. Grave 7. Also commemorated on his wife's gravestone in Elstow Churchyard and on Elstow War memorial.
The QP was rung today because these details and the date of death were previously unknown. It completes QPs for all the men of Elstow killed during WW1, rung on the 100th anniversary of their deaths.
