SEVEN HOURS’ RINGING AT KEMPSTON - Ringing at Kempston was performed by 14 members of the local band. The bells were rung up in peal at 6 a.m. and ringing continued until 7 o’clock, when the Vicar celebrated Holy Communion. Immediately after this a peal of Plain Bob Major was rung. The afternoon’s activities in Kempston Rural were heralded with two short touches. The unwelcome appearance of rain caused the cancellation of part of the village’s celebrations, and so to while away the time until tea a quarter peal was rung, followed by Queen’s, Whittington’s and Tittums. The evening’s ringing concluded with firing the bells 27 times and a good ‘lower in peal'. Altogether 7,894 changes were brought round and the time spent in the ringing chamber amounted to over seven hours.
