Despite being a veteran of some 50 quarter peals, Barbara never quite managed to reach her goal of ringing inside to a quarter - until today! Rung on the passing of Michael J Horseman aged 87. Bell ringer for more than 70 years, Honorary Life Member of the Bath and Wells Diocesan Association of Change Ringers since 1994, stalwart and faithful member of the Farmborough band of which he was Tower Captain for many years.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

With the greatest respect for the life and work of Michael J Horseman of Farmborough, whose funeral took place at Haycombe Crematorium, Bath, earlier today. A good friend and loyal servant of the exercise.

Rung in memory of Michael John Horseman (16/8/1932 - 6/7/2020) at the appointed time of his funeral held this day at Haycombe Crematorium, Bath. O Lord, grant unto him safe lodging and a holy rest.

Remembering Guillaume Durand, French bishop, who died on this day in 1296.

Rung half-muffled by an all-local band on the evening before his committal to mark the passing of Richard Anthony Dowdeswell: 9th August 1939 > 23rd October 2020.

Richard was Tower Captain here for a number of years between 2003 and 2016. He organized the re-hanging of the bells in 2004 and the fundraising to pay for it.

He was well-known and respected throughout the parish and within the local ringing community.

In his last few years he rang using only his right hand to avoid stress on his pacemaker!

He was always ready with a joke and more than keen to pay for his round at The Wyndham Arms after Wednesday practices.

He also paid for the muffles that were used on this occasion.

He loved to boast that he had rung on the 8 at St Andrew’s in Honolulu when he stopped off there while sailing the Pacific!

Tenor tolled half-muffled 100 times before and after the 11am 2 minute silence.

For the fallen. We will remember them.

Rung for half an hour before 11am. At 11.02am, Matthew Butler (Tower Master) chimed two verses of "I Vow To Thee My Country" followed by the National Anthem.

I have been ringing this morning at St John’s. On my own for 11.11..11am non- ceremony. (SEE the CENTRAL COUNCIL WEBSITE attached) I tolled the 9th (tenor for light ten) for about 13 minutes between 10.45 and 11 am between the quarter chimes on the clock. It was getting boring so I decided to ring some Bristol S Major following the line and varying the speed as necessary, I thought about 224 rows would fill the time neatly, but after 5 leads I glanced at the clock, and that broke the concentration. - so there- I had fallen off the line and had no-one to put me back on! There was a few minutes time left to go and eventually I set the bell up just as the clock chimes started for 11 am. As the hour struck 11 ,I heard the Westlands siren go to start the two mins silence. That was good timing, don’t you think? Just luck! There was no official ceremony at the Borough War Memorial but I understand the Mayor was going to attend in his personal capacity - I hope he was listening. ROGER FOX

Half-muffled tenor tolled 100 strokes prior to 11am and again at 11.02 breaking the 2 minute silence to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the interment of a British Warrior unknown by name or rank and in remembrance of all those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
