When the band was being placed for the quarter at Wiveliscombe on 15 May, Alan Lee made a special request to ring the tenor. At the end of the quarter he said he had circled the tower to quarters seven times. Later that evening, whilst writing the details in his record book he thought the date was familiar so he checked back and found that 40 years earlier, on 15th May 1954, he had rung his first quarter peal — the 3rd to Grandsire Doubles at Twerton-on-Avon, conducted by Roger Fry. That quarter was one of the many rung on that day throughout the country to welcome back H.M. Queen Elizabeth II after her first Commonwealth Tour. Incidentally, the Wiveliscombe quarter was Alan's 1998th so another milestone is in sight. V.S.
