"Late" Quarters There I was, sat minding my own business, watching television and waiting for the football highlights, when at 10 pm the phone rings. "What are you doing?" says the nutter with the unmistakable Kiwi accent. "Now ?" I reply, hoping that he really means some date in the future. "Yes! Do you fancy a quarter?" Julian adds enthusiastically. For one brief moment caution gets the better of me, "I'm not sure”. Before I have a chance to add anything I'm told "There's 3 of us plus you and I've never rung a quarter of Minimus so we'll come and pick you up in 10 minutes!", shortly followed by the click of the phone going down. I had just enough time to sort out a choice of 2 methods (this proved to be a mistake with Julian around) when the rest of the band arrived and we were on our way. On our arrival at the campanile we discovered that Robert had received a delivery of steel during the day (he had told the firm not to deliver until the following day) so the first job was to stow it away. We could now get down to the serious stuff — should it be Double Wooly-Back or Kermit Treble Bob? Double Wooly-Back was chosen (purely for the name!) and we set off at a tremendous pace such that the quarter was completed in only 24 minutes. Julian suggested that as we had been so quick and as I'd looked out a second method we should ring another, but first we had to convince Alex that his wife wouldn't be waiting for him with a rolling pin handy. Having persuaded him to stay another half an hour we learnt Kermit Treble Bob, selected our bells and completed another quarter, this time in only 23 minutes. Before Julian could suggest ringing a third quarter (and also trying to break the 20 minute barrier) Alex started to usher us towards the car threatening that any third quarter would be on three and we would have to walk home. It was certainly an achievement to go out and ring 2 quarters and arrive back home within 90 minutes of leaving, but I'll be wary of answering the phone after 9 pm for fear of what I'll be letting myself in for.
